Gilbert Ray Hodges was born on April 4, 1924, in Princeton, Indiana. He was an eight-time All-Star first baseman who spent the majority of his career with the Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers.
Hodges was a beloved figure in Brooklyn, known for his powerful hitting and exceptional defense at first base. He won three Gold Glove Awards and was a key member of the Dodgers' 1955 World Series championship team. After his playing career, he became a successful manager, leading the New York Mets to their first World Series title in 1969.
